Infected Computer? We Clean Pop-ups, Ransomware & Hidden Malware — Today.
Endless pop-ups flooding your screen. A browser that redirects to sketchy websites no matter what you click. A computer that’s slowed to a crawl, mysterious programs in startup, or — worst case — a ransom note demanding bitcoin for files you can’t open. A malware infection isn’t just an annoyance: it’s an active threat to your privacy, your finances, and your digital identity. Searching “virus removal near me” is the right reflex; the wrong one is paying a ransom or running yet another free antivirus while the real infection digs deeper.
PC Repair Center has three walk-in shops in Oceanside, Encinitas, and Carlsbad with techs who clean malware for a living. Most virus-removal jobs are same-day when you drop off in the morning. Free pre-check, transparent pricing, and a 60-day workmanship warranty.
Expert Virus & Malware Removal Services
Modern malware doesn’t behave like it did ten years ago. A single Windows install can carry a browser hijacker that survives Chrome reinstalls, a rootkit hiding inside a signed driver, an adware payload that disables Windows Defender, and a coin-miner running while the system is “idle” — all at once. A consumer antivirus scan often catches one and misses the rest, leaving the system technically clean but still misbehaving.
Our process targets every layer: scanning offline (so the malware isn’t running), inspecting the registry and startup chain by hand, repairing the OS damage left behind, and hardening the machine before you take it home. Every job starts with a free pre-check at the counter; if a deeper diagnostic is needed, the $69 fee is fully credited toward the cleanup the moment you approve the work.
Types of Malware We Remove
Viruses & Worms
Self-replicating malicious code that spreads from file to file or computer to computer, corrupting data and degrading performance along the way. We isolate the infected system from the network, scan offline to bypass the running infection, and repair any system files the worm damaged before it’s reconnected.
Ransomware
The worst-case infection: your photos, documents, and work files are encrypted, with a ransom demand for the decryption key. We never recommend paying the ransom — it funds future attacks and recovery isn’t guaranteed. Instead we identify the strain, check for known decryptors (some strains have been broken by security researchers), and help you restore from backups. If files cannot be recovered, we route you to our data recovery service for forensic options.
Spyware & Keyloggers
Malware that quietly records your activity — passwords, credit-card numbers, banking sessions, even keystrokes. By the time you notice, account compromise has often already happened. We remove the spyware and walk you through which credentials to rotate, which accounts to lock down, and how to enable 2FA where it matters.
Adware & Browser Hijackers
Aggressive pop-ups, search redirects to obscure engines, browser homepages that change themselves back, and “fake virus” alerts urging you to call a tech-support number. These often install as PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) bundled with free downloads. We remove the hijacker, reset browser policies set by the malware, and clean Windows scheduled tasks the adware uses to reinstall itself.
Trojans & Rootkits
Trojans disguise themselves as legitimate software (cracked games, fake “system updaters”) to open a backdoor for attackers. Rootkits go deeper — they hide inside the boot process, signed drivers, or kernel-level hooks, where consumer antivirus often can’t see them. We boot off offline media to scan beneath the rootkit and remove the backdoor at the source.
Phishing & Tech-Support Scam Pop-ups
The “Microsoft says your PC is infected — call this number now!” scam is one of the most common cleanup jobs we see. There is rarely a real infection — it’s a browser overlay or pushed pop-up. We remove the scam payload, reset browser settings, and add anti-phishing protection so the next attempt is blocked at the door. If you already called the number and gave them remote access, bring the machine in immediately — that’s a different (more serious) cleanup.
Cryptojacking Malware
Coin-mining malware that uses your CPU/GPU to mine cryptocurrency for the attacker. Symptoms: fans running flat-out when the computer is idle, sluggish performance, hot chassis, and a noticeably bigger electric bill. We identify and remove the miner, check for the loader that installed it, and patch the vulnerability that let it in.
Signs Your Computer Has a Virus
If you’re seeing any of the following, it’s worth a free pre-check at one of our shops:
- Unusually slow performance — programs taking forever to open, especially on a system that used to be fast
- Unexpected pop-ups or ads — even outside the browser, on the desktop or in system notifications
- Programs opening or closing on their own — applications you didn’t launch, or your antivirus closing repeatedly
- Files missing or encrypted — documents you can’t open, or filenames suddenly ending in .locked / .encrypted / random extensions
- Browser redirecting to strange sites — search results on Bing/Google sending you to unrelated pages
- Antivirus disabled without your knowledge — Windows Defender turned off, third-party AV removed
- Unknown programs in startup — entries in Task Manager > Startup that you don’t recognize
- High CPU or disk usage when idle — fans loud, system warm, performance degraded even with nothing running
- Friends getting spam from your account — your contacts receiving emails or DMs you didn’t send
- Ransom note on the desktop — a text file or wallpaper change demanding payment
A single one of these isn’t always malware (sometimes it’s just driver issues or a bloated startup). Two or more together is a strong signal.
Our Virus Removal Process
- Isolate. We disconnect the infected system from the network the moment you drop it off — no spreading to other devices on our bench.
- Diagnose. We scan offline (booting from clean media) so the malware isn’t running while we look. This catches rootkits and active processes that mask themselves under Windows.
- Remove. We use a layered toolkit — multiple AV engines, anti-rootkit scanners, and manual inspection of registry, startup, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, and Group Policy.
- Repair. We fix the system damage malware leaves behind: re-register broken DLLs, reset browser policies, restore Windows Defender, repair Winsock if needed.
- Protect. We update Windows / macOS, install or reconfigure your antivirus, lock down browser security, and verify backups exist for the files that matter.
- Educate. When you pick up your computer, we walk you through what we found, what to watch for, and the safe-browsing habits that prevent the next infection.

Protect Your Computer from Future Threats
Most malware infections are preventable. Our top recommendations after a cleanup:
- Keep Windows, macOS, and your browser fully updated. Most exploits target patched vulnerabilities — install updates within a week of release.
- Use a reputable antivirus and leave it on. Built-in Windows Defender or Microsoft Defender is fine for most home users; we configure and verify it.
- Avoid pirated software, “cracked” downloads, and shady free-tools sites. That’s the #1 vector we see.
- Don’t call numbers from pop-ups. Microsoft, Apple, and your bank will never ask you to call a number that appeared on your screen.
- Use a password manager and turn on 2FA. Even if a credential leaks, 2FA blocks most account takeovers.
- Back up your files to an external drive AND a cloud service. Ransomware can only ransom what you can’t restore.
- Be skeptical of email attachments and links — even from people you know. Compromised accounts send malware to their entire contact list.

Business Malware Removal & IT Security
A malware infection on a single business workstation can quickly become a network-wide problem — file shares get encrypted, ransomware jumps machines, customer data sits at risk. We help small businesses across North County San Diego with:
- Network-wide threat assessment when one machine is infected — checking for lateral spread before it costs you a workday
- Business continuity during a cleanup (loaner machines, priority turnaround on critical workstations)
- Endpoint protection rollout with managed antivirus across your fleet
- Phishing-resistance training for staff — most ransomware enters through a clicked email
- Compliance-friendly cleanup documentation if your industry needs it (HIPAA, PCI, etc.)
See managed IT services and business IT services for ongoing support, or call to schedule an emergency response if you’re actively dealing with a ransomware incident.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you remove ransomware and recover my files?
Sometimes, yes — depends on the strain. Some ransomware families have had decryptors released by security researchers (No More Ransom Project, law-enforcement seizures, etc.) and we’ll check before quoting any recovery work. For most strains the only reliable path is restoring from backups, which is why offline backups matter so much. We never recommend paying the ransom — it funds the next attack and there’s no guarantee of recovery. If files can’t be recovered through normal means, we route you to our data recovery service for forensic options.
How long does virus removal take?
Most virus and adware cleanups are same-day when you drop off in the morning. Deeper rootkit or ransomware-response cases can take 1–2 business days. We give you an honest ETA before any billable work starts.
Will I lose my data during virus removal?
No. Our default practice is to preserve your drive and personal files through the cleanup. We only wipe or clean-install with your explicit written approval — and even then, we offer to back up your files first. The exception is encrypted files damaged by ransomware itself; those were already lost before you brought the machine in.
How did my computer get infected?
The top vectors we see: clicking a link in a phishing email or DM, installing a “free” or pirated download bundled with adware, opening a malicious attachment (often disguised as an invoice or shipping notice), or visiting a compromised website with an outdated browser. Tech-support scam pop-ups also account for many cleanups, especially when the user called the number on the screen and gave the scammer remote access. We’ll usually identify the entry point during the cleanup so you know what to avoid next time.
My antivirus says it’s clean, but my computer is still weird. Why?
Very common. The original infection may have been neutralized, but it left behind adware, browser hijackers, damaged system files, or modified browser policies that your antivirus doesn’t classify as “threats.” Our service cleans up the leftover damage to restore your computer’s normal behavior — not just remove what’s still actively malicious.
What antivirus do you recommend?
For most home users on Windows 10/11, the built-in Microsoft Defender is genuinely excellent — assuming it’s properly configured and Windows is up to date. We verify both during the cleanup. For users who want extra layers (especially small businesses), we’ll discuss managed endpoint options. macOS users generally don’t need a third-party AV; sane browsing habits and macOS Gatekeeper handle 99% of threats.
Do you offer ongoing protection plans?
Yes — see our managed IT services for businesses and our cybersecurity check for a one-time security audit. For homes, we usually recommend the “configure it once, keep it patched” approach rather than a subscription.
